Ceasar's Camp - Laudun, France

Introduction

A pleasant little ramble for the late afternoon, when it's cool.

Laudun is situated in the Gard region of France, off the N580 about 10km south-west of Bagnols-sur-Ceze.The village and surrounding valleys are dominated by the site of this ancient settlement on the flat top of the hill.

The site is one of several bearing the name 'Camp de Ceasar' and most probably was never visited by any of the Roman Ceasars. The literature suggests it was originally a Celtic oppidum, a fortified camp, enclosed on three sides by cliffs. The fourth side was defended by strong stone walls which still can be seen.

There is an excellent guide featuring a longer version of this walk and others in the Gard region - have a look at the Topo-Guide No D030 (Walk No 30).
